Carlos M. Luis

Carlos M. Luis passed away yesterday morning in Miami.

As an artist and visual poet he exhibited his work in a number of galleries around the country and world. He taught courses and gave lectures on a variety of subjects including Renaissance, Cuban and contemporary art, cultural studies, socialism, avant-garde, surrealism, and philosophy.

Emerging Collector

The Bakehouse Art Complex, BAC, presents a three part interactive series where art enthusiasts can learn the ins and outs of becoming collectors in today’s art market. Each session will be followed by guided studio tours which will allow guests to visit BAC resident artists in their working studios. Denise Gerson, former Associate Director of the Lowe Art Museum and independent curator, will moderate panel discussions on the select Thursday evenings beginning January 24 with Emerge as a Collector, followed by Find the Artist, Make Your Purchase! on February 7, and Now What? Collections Management on February 21. All panels will take place from 6pm to 8pm at the BAC.

The BAC, South Florida’s premiere center for emerging and mid-career artists, provides a unique setting where gallery exhibitions are presented alongside the artist studio, giving guests the opportunity to put into practice all they have learned during the talks.

Aluna Art Foundation will present “Sketches”, a unique book conceived to understand the artistic process of Jorge Camacho, the unforgettable Cuban Surrealist painter who reunites the mythical bequest of Ancient America with the modern legacy of the Avant-Garde, in an oeuvre that expands the magic space of the Surrealistic creation. This Object-Book edition was coordinated by Carmen Elias with texts by the legendary Surrealist poets André Breton and Joyce Mansour, the artist and critic Mario Carreño, and also with texts by writer Carmen Elias, the art critic Carlos M. Luis, the artist and independent curator Surpik Angelini, and his wife Torgia, for whom Camacho creates paintings such as Le Désert.

Carlos M. Luis, Angelini and Torgia, will be presenting this amazing book with 170 reproductions of pencil sketches and 80 color reproductions, printed in 150-gram stucco matte paper with a hardcover in a total edition of 500 volumes.

The Morris Museum of Art’s contemporary artist lecture series, Art Now, presents Anthony Goicolea. He will talk about his work at 6 p.m., and at 7 p.m. there will be food and drinks and music by Dr. Bread.
Goicolea works in a variety of media including multilayered drawings on Mylar, sculptural installation, photography and videography, often creating complex staged landscapes and narrative tableaux. Renelio Marín: Cuban-American artist’s show opens at New Canaan library, CT

From The New Canaan Advertiser

New Canaan Library will be hosting an upcoming exhibition by Cuban-American artist, Renelio Marin, beginning Sunday, Sept. 9, including a reception for the artist from 3-5, which is open to the public.

The exhibit will be on view in the H. Pelham Curtis Gallery through Sunday, Oct. 7.

Entitled “Street Dialogue: New York/Havana, (Diálogo Callejero: Nueva York/La Habana),” the show will feature drawings and paintings in gouache and pencil on paper, illustrating the culture and street life of these two vibrant — and very different — cities, according to a release.

Viredo Espinosa dies

Viredo Espinosa, a member of a revolutionary group of artists in 1950s Cuba whose Abstract Expressionism expanded the scope of the country’s modern art, died Sunday in Costa Mesa. He was 83.
