“In his new series of paintings titled “Uncomfortable Landscapes” cuban artist Angel Delgado explores a theme constantly present throughout his work: the human condition and its relationship to the notions of freedom and identity. In this occasion, Delgado presents a series of paintings that far from the traditional idea of landscape, they constitute a view, indeed, but of rather a social panorama of what one would call modern societies. By juxtaposing everyday objects, aerial views of prisons and human silhouettes, the artist creates a composition that evokes a state of alienation. The individual seems utterly reduced to a series of social codes, to which he is, nevertheless, inextricably bonded.” (Anna Dusi)

Yet, since the very beginning of story-telling, giants have recurred as personalities to fear and respect, making mere humans feel small in their shadow, or humongous when the monster is overcome in battle. Gladstone Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition by Allora & Calzadilla. Fault Lines will explore the overlapping mechanics of polyphonic vocal texturing, geological and sculptural displacements, and adversarial rhetorical language in a new performance-based work, featuring an original composition by Guarionex Morales-Matos. The work will feature performances by young male vocalists from the American Boychoir School and the Transfiguration Boychoir. The performances will take place on the hour Tuesday through Friday from 1 – 5 pm with an additional performance at 5:30 pm, and Saturdays hourly from 12:30 – 5:30 pm.

Fault Lines
 consists of a group of ten stone sculptures whose formal vocabulary derives from geological faults – fractures or discontinuities in the Earth’s crust – and choral risers, a set of tall and wide steps used for standing while singing. While the mineral composition of the rocks in Fault Lines took millions of years to assemble, cutting, removing, and displacing sections of their hardened mass has caused an instant and ever-lasting rupture in geological time. The resulting sculptural permutations function as choral risers, which are dispersed throughout the exhibition space and used by two boy sopranos, or trebles, to engage in a verbal duel.

The material densities of the works infuse the imagery with a sense of visual narration. Parlá’s paintings exist somewhere between transcription and revelation – the accumulation of words, signs and markings evolve into a complex and unpredictable symphony. Time is very much at stake, and each image is an effort to demarcate the passing of time.

Magnan Metz Gallery is pleased to present the fifth solo exhibition for Alexandre Arrechea. The show will be on view from September 13 – October 11, 2014 with a reception for the artist from 6-8 pm on Friday, September 12th.

The often overlooked study and its relationship to the realized artwork have always been of significant importance to Alexandre Arrechea. The two co-existed in the same space; it’s the methodology that shows the natural process in creating the artwork. Traditionally the first stands as the matrix of the second. For this exhibition, however, Arrechea has turned the tables. The artist explains, “With The Map and the Fact I intend to rearrange this relationship with the objective to ask questions of our reality so the drawing in this project becomes a structure closer to the language of a map or a graphical representation of a given ‘territory’. The object is related to this simply through the construction of a section of that map.”

Swampspace’s Oliver Sanchez on Collaborating with Art Stars

In 2006, Oliver Sanchez transformed the implausible into reality. “I tarred and feathered a classic Rolls-Royce Corniche convertible,” the unpretentious and soft-spoken 55-year-old Cuban-American recalls. “The hardest part of the job was finding the right type of feathers, but we finally settled on goose down after going through a bunch of samples ranging from plain chicken feathers to the more exotic and ornate.”

Sanchez defiled the Rolls for a Wynwood exhibition by two Scandinavian artists, Michael Elmgreen and Ingar Dragset, who aimed to erect a monument to art-world avarice. In the years since, he has become the go-to guy for making artists’ visions a reality. He has created works for big-time locals such as Daniel Arsham, Bert Rodriguez, Naomi Fisher, Bhakti Baxter, and Typoe, as well as established international names.

Jorge Rodriguez Gerada: National Portrait Gallery Commissions Cuban American Artist to Create a Large-Scale Landscape Portrait for the National Mall

The Smithsonian’s National Portrait Gallery has commissioned a grand landscape portrait from Cuban American urban artist, Jorge Rodríguez-Gerada, to be placed temporarily on the National Mall in October.

For the work titled “Out of Many, One,” the English translation of E pluribus unum, Rodríguez-Gerada will use several images of people photographed in Washington, D.C., to create a composite portrait that will not only be an interactive walk-through experience for visitors but will also be viewable from the newly reopened Washington Monument and from space. The work will be placed on a 10-acre site and stretch across 6 acres of land midway between the World War II and Lincoln memorials along the south side of the Reflecting Pool.

In 1961 the conceptual artist Piero Manzoni rattled the art world by canning his own feces and making them available for sale, pricing the cans by their weight in exchange for the current value of gold. The following year, in which the Hollywood star Marilyn Monroe dies, Andy Warhol screened the image of the starlet over painted canvases, including golden ones, immortalizing Monroe and establishing her image as one of the most recognized artworks in the world. In 1964, the cult classic film Goldfinger was released and became one of the most iconic James Bond films ever made. The movie unambiguously associated gold with power, glamour but also danger. In parallel, archeological gold was also finding its way into the culture of the masses: from 1961 to 1981 Tutankhamen Treasures and The Treasures of Tutankhamun toured North America and the western hemisphere for the first time, becoming some of the most attended museum exhibits to this day.
Presented in conjunction with the Bass Museum of Art’s 50th anniversary GOLD includes painting, sculpture, video, photography, and installation.

“Portraiture Now: Staging the Self” features the work of David Antonio Cruz, Carlee Fernandez, María Martínez-Cañas, Rachelle Mozman, Karen Miranda Rivadaneira, and Michael Vasquez, all artists of Latino background, who make us aware of how identities are constructed and negotiated via portraiture. Seeking to relieve portraiture of its charge to memorialize individuals and convey essential aspects of their identities, they use it instead to explore the ambiguities and changes in individual character. Theatricality is central to their inquiry, as they represent narratives remembered or imagined from their own family histories, or superimpose portraits of their loved ones over themselves, looking for what is shared or unique in individuality, searching like an actor for a character. As they present themselves in a staged manner, portraiture loses its aura of certainty, and becomes an evolving map for finding oneself and others.

Panel Discussion on Cuban Art with Ramon Cernuda and Margarita Cano, moderated by Bonnie Clearwater, Director and Chief Curator, NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale

Ramón Cernuda is a publisher, editor, writer, collector and internationally recognized expert on Cuban Art. After 30 years pursuing a lifelong love of Cuban art as a private art collector and researcher, he established Cernuda Arte gallery in 2000. He has been the publisher of La Gran Enciclopedia Martiana and a founding member of the Enciclopedia de Cuba Publishing Group. He was a member of the board of directors of the Cuban Museum of Arts and Culture and served as Vice President from 1987-1990.

Born in Havana, Cuba, artist and arts organizer Margarita Cano arrived in the United States in 1962. She worked at the Miami-Dade Public Library as a Community Relations and Art Services Coordinator. In 1983, she organized the landmark exhibition, The Miami Generation: Nine Cuban American Artists (curated by Giulio Blanc) for Miami’s Cuban Museum of Arts and Culture. In 1993, Cano began painting full-time and creating one-of-a-kind artist books. Her work is reminiscent of the illuminated manuscripts of the High Middle Ages, and her idealized landscapes of her beloved island serve as settings for the interaction of the sacred and the mundane.

Cuban-born artist Leonel Matheu has been a prominent figure on the national and international arts scene for over twenty years. Crossroads of the Dystopia is Matheu’s first major survey exhibition. His works range from colored pencil drawings, ink on paper, oil on canvas, to video, multimedia and public installations. Curated by Janet Batet, the exhibition presents more than 20 years of work and provides a comprehensive overview of Matheu’s most distinctive imagery. In describing his body of work, curator Batet says: “If a single symbol could summarize the iconic work of Leonel Matheu, it would be the enigmatic head-a sort of dome-that appears as a constant throughout his work. It serves as a self-portrait and collective portrayal of a nation marked by diaspora and dystopia. This symbol embodies the symptoms and stigma of contemporary global society. With a masterful use of the synthetic graphic design language, Matheu builds up a personal and yet universal iconography that he interweaves in intimate fables of our daily existence. Spirituality, technology, passion, solitude, dreams, chimeras, and deceptions are at the core of his thoughtful body of work.”

Impact and Legacy: CINTAS exhibit in Miami celebrates the art of exile

Impact and Legacy, the CINTAS Foundation’s 50th-anniversary exhibition celebrating the work of Cuban artists in exile, is a clear validation of the foundation’s success. The sweeping exhibition features the work of CINTAS fellows and honors the foundation’s benefactor, Oscar B. Cintas, a Cuban industrialist, arts patron and U.S. ambassador, who died in 1957. His estate funds annual visual arts fellowships for artists of Cuban heritage living outside the island and gives awards, too, in music composition, architecture and creative writing.

Among them is Anthony Goicolea, whose work is included in this year’s show.

SALTWORKS is pleased to present Patterns of Protest, new works on paper by Atlanta-based Cuban-born artist, Alejandro Aguilera. This is Aguilera’s third solo exhibition at the gallery. The work will be on view at the White Provisions SALTWORKS space in suite A06 through July 26, 2014.

Consisting of works created over the last two years, Patterns of Protest started in 2008 during the time of the global economic crisis. Aguilera began channelling the daily news events and depictions of large groups protesting into his drawings and studio practice. In these works, Aguilera embodies the mind of the journalist, painting cinematic scenes of the unfolding spectacle. The public arena is a place of improvisation, where the individual morphs into a potent force for change.

The Cuban Museum, Inc. and the Aluna Art Foundation are proud to announce the upcoming exhibition Women on the Edge of an Island / Mujeres al borde de una isla, a group show that includes 23 visual artists from the Cuban Diaspora who explore through art the complex realities of displacement, biculturalism, separation, national identity, and personal and family upheaval that results from the experience of migration and exile.

This program is part of the Cuban Museum’s Sweet Home Museo Cubano Series, made possible by an Arts Challenge Grant from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation; the Miami Dade County Department of Cultural Affairs, Board of County Commissioners of Miami-Dade; and additional support from Bank of America, Memorial Plan, ArtesMiami, and Friends of the Museum.

The show has been curated by Jesús Rosado and Ileana Fuentes and represents a collaborative effort with the Aluna Art Foundation. The exhibition opens on Thursday, June 26, 2014 with an opening reception at 5:00 pm.

A unique exhibit of contemporary Cuban poster art by one of its leading exponents, Rolando Pulido, who has selflessly dedicated his talent to support the burgeoning civic resistance movement on the Island. Although within the stylistic continuum of the anti-capitalist poster art that emerged during the first decade of the Cuban revolution—including Alberto Korda’s universally recognized image of Che Guevara—post-revolution poster art, such as Pulido’s, has met a drastically divergent course. The former, as Susan Sontag would point out in her incisive 1970 introduction to “The Art of Revolution,” became a commodity itself. Pulido’s posters, on the other hand, are as technically brilliant and as focused on communication as the best representatives of the genre, yet cannot be defined as coveted consumer art. The distinguished journalist David Rieff will place Pulido’s posters in historical context, addressing the extent to which current cultural trends and renewed political awareness might begin to blot out their marginality.

Award-winning visual artist Rolando Pulido was born and raised in Cienfuegos, Cuba, and has resided in New York City since 1980.

Cuban-American artist Jorge Pardo opens exhibition in the Augustins Museum in Toulouse

TOULOUSE.- The unique collection of 12th-century Romanesque capitals held at the Musée des Augustins is one of the great cultural treasures of Toulouse. Internationally renowned for his work at the frontiers of art, design and architecture, Jorge Pardo has been invited to rethink the display of this exceptional collection. His installation will remain in place until the 2016 festival.

By turns a painter, designer, architect and display specialist, Jorge Pardo made just about everything he lives with – the furniture, the lamps, his studio, his house. His intensely colourful work seems to flow continuously from one founding impulsion. For going on twenty years he has tirelessly rethought and questioned aesthetic categories and hierarchies, drawing on the ambiguity of a system in which art is constantly undermined and the functional nearly always de-habilitated.

In 1983, Miami’s former Cuban Museum of Arts and Culture presented the groundbreaking exhibition The Miami Generation, which represented a pivotal moment in South Florida’s cultural history and brought together for the first time nine emerging artists from Miami’s Cuban exile community who were part of a first generation that received its artistic education in the United States. Now, more than 30 years later, NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale picks up where this exhibition left off, with The Miami Generation:Revisited, a new exhibition featuring works created since 1983 by the original nine artists: Mario Bencomo, María Brito, Humberto Calzada, Pablo Cano, Emilio Falero, Fernando García, Juan González, Carlos Maciá, and César Trasobares. Works on view address the issues of exclusion, inclusion, and sexual identity politics that those in the original show explored, as well as demonstrate the variety of materials the artists use and how their styles and interests have evolved. The exhibition also reveals how each artist has synthesized the dynamics of native and adopted cultural forces to convey their feelings, dreams, and aspirations. These artists were part of a thriving art community in the early 1980s that contributed to the emergence of South Florida as a hub for international art and culture. The exhibition also highlights NSU Museum of Art’s strong commitment to Latin American Art, which includes a large collection of work by Cuban artists and the Stanley and Pearl Goodman Latin American Art Research Center which will launch in 2015.

Ramón Williams was born in Havana, Cuba is 1969. He graduated from the Instituto Superior pedagógico in La Habana with a MasterDegree in Visual Arts in 1992. Between spring and summer of 1996, Ramón Williams exhibited in Havana two groups of paintings: Imágenes de la enciclopedia and La mar estuvo serena. By the end of the same year Williams emigrated to Miami, Florida. Living and working in this city during the last eighteen years, his artistic endeavors yielded to the exploration in the realms of photography,video and computer animation. Walls and contentions barriers all over the city have been subject to a sort of poetic CSI lens in Williams’s hands, where spontaneous perception and dedicated capture of traces interweaves with his skills for computer generated imagery, and his fondness for oriental calligraphy, stream of consciousness writers …and some psychiatry lab tests. As a comeback to the days of pigments (somehow aconsequence and turnaround of the lens, the image in movement, and the 3D world), Scaping Back titles a selection of Ramon Williams recent Miami roadscape paintings that will be exhibited at Farside Gallery on June 7th, 2014, for the first time in the USA.

The exhibition will be paired with a catalogue with essays written by curator Maria Elena Soto and artist Eugenio D’Melon.

Agustín Rolando Rojas is a mid-career artist who lives and works in Toronto, Canada. Rojas earned a BFA from San Alejandro Fine Art School (1978) and graduated from the prestigious Instituto Superior de Artes (ISA 1983) in Havana with a degree in Printmaking.

Questioning the stereotype of printmakers as solely followers of traditions and procedures, Agustín masters technique to the point of contradicting it. In his series of drypoints (drypoints without inhibition), he attacks the plates, then erases the marks and re-works the matrixes as if they were pieces of paper. Technically, his artwork operates as a continuous exercise of questioning beliefs about printmaking. Conceptually, it is a direct result of his diasporic experience as a migrant. His work explores the idea of loss and separation, reunion and hope as a permanent condition of displacement and adaptation.

Las Vegas based artist Angel Delgado will present a new series of painting, drawings and installations in a solo exhibition titled “Constancy”. The work of Delgado is largely based on the limitations, restrictions, prohibitions and controls that you are constantly imposed on human beings in society. Through keen observation of the everyday and the ordinary, Delgado is trying to transform those objects or situations that are the daily step in photographs, drawings, videos, paintings, installations and performance, with a poetic that makes us reflect on our lives, about social processes or on the same processes of artistic creation.

Delgado has shown his work internationally for over 15 years, including solo shows in Havana, Madrid, Mexico City, Puerto Vallarta, Istanbul, New Orleans, Los Angeles and Pittsburgh.

Demonstrating the artist’s remarkable ability to transform materials and their surrounding architecture into an enveloping perceptual experience, Teresita Fernández: As Above So Below combines graphite and gold to create a series of immersive, interconnected installations whose scale shifts from intimate to vast, from miniature to panoramic. Fernández’s largest solo exhibition to date, As Above So Below is made up entirely of new works.

Describing a universe in balance, the phrase “as above, so below” originates from the ancient Hermetic tradition central to alchemy, in which every action occurring on one level of reality (physical, emotional, or mental) correlates to every other. Responding to MASS MoCA’s massive and light-filled first-floor galleries, Fernández’s trio of new landscape-informed, large-scale installations embodies this expression, and is united through the show’s elaborately detailed exploration of two essential minerals.
