Autopia explores the ubiquitous presence of the automobile in contemporary culture. “Autopia” combines the words auto and Utopia to highlight the importance that the car industry played as one of the paramount symbols of progress in the 20th Century. What is its place in contemporary culture? Does car culture remain central to our ideal of progress? In this exhibition, the legacy of automobiles is being reviewed and reassessed through the work of artists from three continents.

The exhibition is divided in four thematic groups, dealing with the central role of cars in the American High/Way of Life, the USA-USSR fight for consumers’ hearts and minds during the Cold War, the impact of automobiles in the natural realm, and the ways in which it has affected human lives, rewriting maps through commerce and migration, and changing urban centers like Miami.

Fall Semester brings together a diverse group of theorists, critics, researchers, and interested individuals to engage in multifaceted discourse on contemporary society and culture. Through public lectures and a digital platform, the second iteration of Fall Semester addresses current intersections of what constitutes the self. After discussing Miami as a globalized city in its inaugural session in 2014, Fall Semester now turns its focus to the city’s inhabitants, those directly affected by current social and economic change.

Fall Semester is the project of artists Felice Grodin, Odalis Valdivieso, Angela Valella, Marcos Valella, and Antonia Wright. Collectively they have developed an organizational strategy to unite the contributors’ discussions into a cohesive program providing a platform for both speakers and attendees. The project arose from their concerns with global issues which have influenced their individual practice and research.

Carmen Herrera: Lines of Sight is the first museum exhibition of this groundbreaking artist in New York City in nearly two decades. Focusing on the years 1948 to 1978, the period during which Herrera developed her signature style, the show features more than fifty works, including paintings, three-dimensional works, and works on paper. It begins with the formative period following World War II, when Herrera lived in Paris and experimented with different modes of abstraction before establishing the visual language that she would explore with great nuance for the succeeding five decades. Many of these works have never been displayed before in a museum.

New Jersey-based sculptor Armando Guiller investigates the aesthetics found in the principles of geometry and nature in the exhibition Armando Guiller: Patterns and Beauty, which will be on view at the William Paterson University Galleries from September 6 through October 14, 2016.

The exhibition, in the Court Gallery of the University’s Ben Shahn Center for the Visual Arts, features Guiller’s sculptures from the “Free Matter,” “Helical,” and “Spiral” series, which reveal the influence of such artistic movements as Constructivism and Minimalism as well as Newtonian and Euclidian principles. Trained as an artist and mechanical engineer, Guiller is fascinated by “finding the patterns that surround us and in some way guide us.”

Zilia Sánchez at Galerie Lelong, New York – Interview

In the 1950s, on a Havana rooftop and reeling from the recent passing of her father, Cuban artist Zilia Sánchez (b. 1926) had an epiphany. A gust of wind blew a hanging laundry sheet (the very one her father had been lying on when he died) against a pipe and a wall, and in its resulting form she discovered an entirely new approach to her work. She abandoned painting on flat surfaces and began pulling canvas tautly over oddly-shaped wooden armatures, creating curved peaks that opened painting up from its conventionally rectangular state. Introducing three-dimensional forms to her work, Sánchez’s shift challenged the preferred frontal view of artworks by interrupting the face-on gaze and coercing it around corners.

Allora & Calzadilla: Echo to Artifact is the first major exhibition in Canada of the work of internationally renowned artists, Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla. Teresita Fernández Lights a Fire in the West

Teresita Fernández knows how to light up a room, and she’s done just that inside the front gallery of Anthony Meier Fine Arts in San Francisco. The century-old house inside which Mr. Meier’s gallery is located has been set ablaze by Ms. Fernández’s fiery handiwork, which features a smoky landscape rendered in charcoal and a glittering inferno made from thousands of glazed ceramic tiles.

Ms. Fernández is widely known for her large-scale experiential installations, the most recent being a 500-foot mirrored canopy for New York’s Madison Square Park which was experienced by nearly 50,000 people each day during its nine-month run.

Museum Morsbroich presents Theoretical Beach. The title stands for the transition from sea to land. With simple materials and agile gestures, Diango Hernandez transforms the whole castle into an open processual space that enables visitors to make the transition between sea and beach and sense the tension between the different elements.

The exhibition addresses precisely that point where, in the metaphor of the sea, the “movement of being” meets “solid ground,” in other words, the place “where man establishes his institutions” (Hans Blumenberg). The place where the categories and value of being which shape and determine the cultural, social and political system become manifest.

Raúl Cordero, born in La Habana, Cuba, in 1971 and based in Mexico City, is a multidisciplinary artist, with a background in art and design. His early work was focused on the uses of videoart, installation and photography in relation to how painting establishes a dialog with these new artistic languages. In the last decade, Cordero has approached painting from a post-conceptual position, incorporating two problems, which have always been present in his practice. On the one hand, the question about how we coexist with images, and on the other, the unfolding of visual production strategies’ inclusion into the perverse, arbitrary and contradictory global universe of contemporary art.

Elio experiments with the construction of the intimacy of interior and exterior spaces, all things carnal and decorative, functional and artistic, manufactured and native.  His soft sculptures reimagine familiar forms using, in abundant measure, plant and carnal shapes, juxtaposed against sundry objects, metal screws, lace corsets, chains, belts, wire, filament, pins — with results that are pictorial equivalents of familiar concepts and concerns.

Freedom and Ambiguity: An Interview with Julio Larraz

With an ease and precision that comes only from a lifelong dedication to one’s craft, it is no wonder why so many consider Cuban born artist Julio Larraz to be one of the most important Latin American artists working today. Larraz creates monumental works of art that are majestic and refined, but still somehow accessible. His works, though painted naturalistically, are often highly imaginative, and this duality is what draws the viewer in.

Larraz has had an impressive career dating back to the 1960s when he drew political caricatures for the New York Times, The Washington Post, The Chicago Tribune, Vogue Magazine, and other publications. He is the recipient of an award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and his work can be found in museums, galleries, and private collections all across the globe. I had the great honor of speaking with Larraz about his work and what he thinks his art means.

A unique exhibit by internationally acclaimed and multi-faceted Cuban artist Gladys Triana, who during her long career has excelled in painting, sculpture, etching, and photography. This solo exhibit, Reflections of Shadows, includes a video trilogy, as well as a selection of four of her photography series since 2008.

Throughout her artistic trajectory, Triana has continuously renewed and reinvented her language, particularly through photography, as a means of expression and reflection on the human condition. In her photography, the artist transforms small objects from daily life into irreconcilable sculptured shapes, creating an iconography that speaks eloquently about our fragile surroundings in our journey through this world.

The Swan Coach House Gallery and the Forward Arts Foundation are pleased to present the work of internationally-known artist, Alejandro Aguilera. The works featured in this exhibition are social and political cartoons and illustrations that he has executed daily since leaving his homeland of Cuba. This is the first time the work has been presented to the public.

The pieces selected for this exhibition are divided into themes describing American life, portraits of artists and spiritual world leaders, satirical cartoons of political leaders, and a series of abstract drawings. Humor has long been a part of the culture and character of the Cuban people and is used as a form of coping with their oppression. These images are amusing and reflective rather than mocking or ironical. They function as tools of communication more in favor of understanding rather than confrontation. Unlike the spoken or written word, drawings are universally readable and for Aguilera function as a means to keep the world informed of the communist regime dominating his people. He sends them to peers all over the world and to his family still in Cuba.
