Emilio Pérez in group show “Nature Pops!”, at Wave Hill, Bronx, NY

July 12 – September 5, 2016

Exhibition Reception: Sunday, July 17, 2‒4:30 PM

Wave Hill
West 249th Street and Independence Avenue (Front Gate)
Bronx, NY 10471-2899

A half-century after the emergence of Pop art as a revolutionary response to new norms of consumerism, Nature Pops!, Wave Hill’s summer 2016 exhibition, brings together work by artists who calibrate this movement in contemporary terms. Continuing to re-evaluate popular culture, particularly the increasing mediation of our experience by technology, artists question whether we can still have an authentic experience―even in the natural world. Interpreting nature and the environment through a populist lens, Nature Pops! includes recent work that is especially relevant in an age of digital overload and environmental crisis. Presenting the show at Wave Hill, a stunning garden and cultural center located in the Riverdale section of the Bronx, adds particular depth and dimension to the discussion.

Galerie Lelong
528 West 26th Street

Emilio Perez’s third solo exhibition at Galerie Lelong, Footprints on the Ceiling, will showcase the artist’s unique method of combining painting and drawing in a body of new work that includes a monumental, 40-foot long mural painting, one of the artist’s largest site-specific works to date. The exhibition reveals a departure from previous bodies of work in the use of a richer, more complex color palette, a more distinct figuration, and expanded negative space. Also shown alongside the new paintings will be a triptych from 2011, on view for the first time in New York. The artist will be present for the opening on January 9th from 6-8pm.

EMILIO PEREZ: Lux Resident Artist at Lux Art Institute, CA

In Studio
Nov 10 2011 – Dec 10 2011
On Exhibit
Nov 10 2011 – Dec 31 2011

Lux Art Institute

1550 South El Camino Real
Encinitas, CA 92024

Vibrant, textured and bursting with a calculated chaos, the dynamic works of painter Emilio Perez also evince sculpture. The artist’s unique process entails painting sheets of latex and acrylic in different hues onto wood panels and then, using an x-acto blade, slicing away at and removing layers, revealing tracts of muted colors underneath. The canvases juxtapose freeform movement with labor-intensive, measured actions, simultaneously evoking upheaval and harmony, spontaneity and control. Dizzying, vertiginous patterns, roiling swirls, undulating lines and tornado-like vortices are interwoven with short, staccato breaks. They build up and collide into one another with a force that creates a physical and psychological phenomenon wherein the eye attempts to fill in for what is not actually there.
