November 23, 2013 – January 16, 2014

Opening reception Saturday, November 23, 7-9 pm

Fredric Snitzer Gallery
2249 NW 1st Place
Miami, FL 33127

The mirror has been a frequently recurring signifier in Martínez Celaya’s work, functioning as a proxy subject, a site of uncanny reflexivity, and an object of philosophical inquiry.  In Burning As It Were A Lamp, the mirror is again at the center of a dense web of visual, literary and philosophical relationships which investigate issues of identity, memory, and loss through the space of multi-disciplinary installation. The exhibition is a continuation of themes and concepts explored in a recent museum-wide environment at SITE Santa Fe, The Pearl.

Blue–statistically the most popular color–can soothe or electrify; it can convey mourning or celebration, melancholy or elation. Although we commonly associate both the Blues and Picasso’s “Blue Period” with suffering, the color blue can also connote erotic passion, security, infinity, purity, fluent thought, and spiritual ascension.

The Fredric Snitzer Gallery’s “Summer Time Blues” exhibition features artists ALICE AYCOCK, ZACK BALBER, LORIEL BELTRAN, TIMOTHY BUWALDA, SEAN DACK, JACIN GIORDANO, LUIS GISPERT, GAVIN PERRY, BERT RODRIGUEZ, DIEGO SINGH, and MICHAEL VASQUEZ, each of whom distinctly and intuitively explores the color which arguably has the greatest emotional and spiritual range.

….

This June at Fredric Snitzer Gallery, we modestly aim to pay homage to Kurt Schwitters in our group exhibition MERZBAU – NOW. In this group exhibition we will present works by artists Maria Martinez-Canas, John Bock, Michael Vasquez, Christian Holstad, Ida Ekblad, Bert Rodriguez, Mauricio Gonzalez, Yasue Maetake and Jose Bedia. Kurt Schwitters’ comprehensive influence on art history resonates with each of these artists uniquely. While each of the participating artists has a distinctive style of their own that has surely evolved since the early 20th century, cohesively their collages, sculptures, photographs, and installations are intertwined with the multidimensional artistic relationships that Kurt Schwitters himself explored.
