If you know Agustín Fernández’s artwork only from its star turn in Brian DePalma’s 1980 movieDressed to Kill, a new exhibition of the Cuban master’s drawings at the Frost Art Museum offers a more nuanced take on his working method and subject matter.

Fernández’s appearance in an erotic crime thriller is hardly an unexpected pairing. Adept at painting, sculpture and printmaking, he portrayed human sexuality in a way that was both seductive and threatening.

Shared Threads: Maria Lino’s Portrait of a Shipibo Healer July 18, 2012 – September 30, 2012
Shared Threads is a collaborative experience where two artists from vastly different cultures and artistic traditions came together in the Amazon region of Pucallpa, Peru. The results are an extraordinary multi-media integration of tradition, design and technique in a soulful exchange of knowledge.

Miami, FL

March 23 to April 17, 2011

Frost Art Museum
10975 SW 17th Street
Miami, FL 33199
Writing done with fly pigment, ping pong balls in the shape of clouds and paper shapes that seem to go on forever are just a few of the objects that bridge the line between the real and surreal, the natural and man-made and the figurative and abstract works in the next installation of Aesthetics and Values Fine Art Exhibition (A&V) at The Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum at Florida International University (FIU). Sixty-four FIU Honors College students worked with 10 of Miami’s most notable artists at the sixth annual A&V exhibition.

“This collaboration has proven to be quite successful,” said Carol Damian, Director and Chief Curator of The Patricia & Phillip Frost Art Museum. “Now in its second year at the museum, this is a unique experience for students to learn the intricacies of curating an exhibition within the confines of a true operational museum.”

Each of these works will have visitors challenging the concept of reality. The A&V 2011 exhibition will feature the works of Daniel Arsham, José Bedia, Ivan Toth Depeña, Jacin Giordano, Fabian Peña, Karen Rifas, Cristina Lei Rodriguez, John Sanchez, Jen Stark and Antonia Wright. Several of the artists have created works specifically for this year’s exhibition.

…..Your first encounter with Maria Brito’s show at the Frost Art Museum could be confusing. You may even wonder why it’s there. If so, you’ll please Brito, a rebel at heart who likes controversy. Celebrated Miami artist and FIU alumna, Brito traces her rebellious spirit to the long ago moment she concealed gold jewelry in clothes she wore on a Pedro Pan flight from Havana to Miami. Everyone knew that doing this risked terrible consequences, she recalls, but she couldn’t leave the jewelry, a small bracelet still in her possession, behind.
