GEAN MORENO AND ERNESTO OROZA at Wharton + Espinosa, Los Angeles

by Andrea Magenheimer

Gean Moreno and Ernesto Oroza are both Miami cultural heavyweights, and in their work together are known for curating, writing and research-driven artistic practice.

The two have collaborated on several projects, harkening back to their first show together in 2008,Studio Scrap Stool. These stools, cut and reorganized 2×4” planks, were the beginning of a dialogue regarding materials and their concern with the standards of a “designed object,” and how that could be manipulated to produce meaning.

‘Home: Dream Home’ an edgy exhibit at Praxis

BY BETH DUNLOP

THE MIAMI HERALD

July 17, 2011

Nothing is quite what it seems in the exhibition Home: Dream Home, and yet everything is indeed exactly what it is.

A globe-shaped pendant lamp by Ernesto Oroza sparkles like glass. It’s actually layers — many layers — of Scotch tape, and at the same time, a fully functioning light fixture . (It’s called, whimsically enough, Little Havana Lampshade.)

….

Home: Dream Home, on view through Aug. 13 at Praxis International Art, is a showhouse like no other. Though it’s a gallery exhibition, you can touch, sit on or in the case of the “fur’’ rug — roll around on the art.

Gean Moreno and Ernesto Oroza on Generic Objects

By Gean Moreno and Ernesto Oroza

e-flux journal #18
09/2010

By generic objects we don’t mean objects that affect a kind of generic quality—brilliantly commonsensical and ordinary objects that come from the rarefied space of the designer’s studio, and draw their value from that space. We mean really generic—milk crates, plastic buckets, shipping containers, wooden palettes, traffic barricades, decorative concrete blocks, urban trash cans and dumpsters, rubber tires, scaffolding, Scotch tape. It’s not that any of these aren’t designed, but rather that they are designed so incredibly well as to function with unparalleled efficiency within the systems of circulation for which they are intended.
